It depends on what you are looking for. I think the boring word-meaning apps are not very helpful as it is the same as just taking a dictionary and writing down the words in your own pace. Personally, I like the interesting approach, i.e. through interactive interface etc. I have personally used Memrise as a good tool, but I have heard Duolingo is also good.
