Its and it's. People seem to be confused about the difference between its and it's. In some cases, people use both the words interchangeably without even realizing they are 2 different words. It's is short for it is or it has. Example: It's time to leave (It is time to leave). It's raining (It is raining) It's been raining awhile (It has been raining awhile). It's been a long time (It has been a long time) To check whether the use of "it's" is correct, check whether it expands into it is or it has. If not, the usage is wrong. Its is the possessive form of the pronoun "it." Example: Its colour is pink. It has crossed its limits. To check whether you are using its correctly, try using her and his instead of its. (Her and his are feminine and masculine possessive forms respectively.) So, its and it's are homophones.
